If you have any questions or concerns about this, talk to the healthcare professional who prescribed your steroids. Your doctor, rheumatology nurse or pharmacist should give you a steroid card if you need one. Make sure any change to your dose of steroid is updated on the card. If you’re taking high doses of steroids, or if you’re on them for more than three weeks, you’ll need to carry a steroid card.

Steroid tablets, also called corticosteroid tablets, are a type of anti-inflammatory medicine used to treat a range of conditions.

Most treatment centres will test newly diagnosed patients to see if they are immune to chickenpox. You can ask your child’s health team for the results or, if it hasn’t been done, if it needs to be. This usually resolves when your medication is reduced or stops. During your course of steroids, your blood pressure will be monitored by your medical team.

Older medicines may have been used effectively for many years in children without problems but the manufacturer has not been required to collect data and amend the licence. This does not mean that it is unsafe for children and young people to be prescribed such a medicine ‘off-licence/off-label’. Steroids in the treatment of lymphoma
If, however, you’re pregnant or breastfeeding you should discuss it with your doctor before having a steroid injection. Steroid injections reduce the effect of your body’s immune system in the short term. If you’ve had a steroid injection into a joint or muscle, your healthcare professional may give you a steroid card for you to carry around. There is evidence that having too many steroid injections into the same area can cause damage to the tissue inside the body.
